CIA Boot Switch

Technically, this is a CIA Boot switch that allows booting and use of DF1, or an external drive as the boot (DF0:) drive. This persists until the system is turned off, or another Boot Reset is issued, see below.

The primary use, I believe, is keeping the main floppy drive intact, by allowing (mostly) games to be booted from an external Gotek drive; the advantage of the Gotek is that it allows multiple disks to be stored on a USB thumb drive as images (ADFs) and be run as if they were actual disks, plus, there are thousands available to be downloaded from the Web.

This works with either 3resets, [CTRL]-[LAmiga]-[RAmiga], or by holding down the reset sequence for 5to 6 seconds which causes the external floppy disk drive (DF1:) to be seen asDF0:, the boot drive.

When the DF1: drive thenbecomes the DF0:, the internal drivedisappears. The drives are switched back to normal, by either powering off thecomputer, or by doing the same reset sequence (3 times or holding 5 – 6seconds).

To install, just pull theeven CIAchip(8520) from its socket nearest the A500’s floppy drive, plug it in the device, matching up all the orientation markers (half-moon notches) on chip to socketto motherboard, and place it back into the CIA socket. Kindly be gentle with the re-insertion to make sure that all the pins are aligned in the socket.
