The 3COM Fast EtherLink XL 10/100 PCI [ 3C905B ] network interface cards came in three were follwed by the 3C905C-TX-M series which included [ This Item ]
  • 3C905CX-TXNM
  • The 3C905C-TX-M NIC connects a PCI-compliant PC to either a 10 Mbps Ethernet network or a 100 Mbps Fast Ethernetnetwork.
The 3C905C-TX-M NIC supports a suite of DynamicAccess® Technology features for desktop andnetwork management.Features Supported by this NIC :
    • RJ-45 Connector for 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX
    • Remote Wake-Up
    • DMI 2.0
    • Integrated Boot ROM with Managed PC Boot Agent (MBA) Software
    • Traffic Prioritizaztion
    • Remote Monitoring [ RMON & RMON2 ]
    • Efficient Multicast Control
    • Remote System Alerts [ Heartbeat Packets ]

    Remote Wake-Up
Is the ability to remotely power on a network PC.
Support is automatically enabled with the NIC\'s Remote Wake-Up connector is attached to the 3-pin Remote Wake-Upconnector on a PC motherboard.
When the PC is powered off and receives a wake-up packet that is sent through the network from a WOL managementapplication, the NIC turns of the power to the PC.The PC must have the foillowing items to utilize Remote Wake-Up [ Wake On Lan ]
    • PCI 2.2 Compliant Bus OR a 3-Pin Remote Wake-Up Connector on the PC Motherboard
    • BIOS that Supports Remote Wake-Up
    • 5-Volt Standby Power Supply Unit Rated at a Minimum of 375 milliamperes
    • A Management Application Capable of Sending a Remote Wake-Up event or a Magic Packet Frame

    DynamicAccess Software
Is advanced network software that improves performance, management and network control.DynamicAccess software adds intelligence to the NIC by integrating the following features:
    • RMON SmartAgents
Enables full RMON reporting on all network segments, including switched networks, without the need to place dedicatedRMON probes throughout the network.
RMON SmartAgents are for use with the DynamicAccess network edge monitor or other remote Prioritization [ IEEE 802.1p/Q ]
Ensures that business-critical and delay-sensitive traffic ( such as multimedia applications ) has priority over normaldata

    • Fast IP
Eliminates router bottlenecks and improves performance in switched networks

    • Efficient Multicast Control
Prevents flooding of switched networks by multicast applications such as video training, stock quotes, or online newsfeeds

    DMI 2.0
Desktop Management Interface 2.0 enables managed PCs and net PCs to report details about themselves and theirperipheral devices across the network to a DMI 2.0 management application.
A network administrator can then use this information to assist in remotely managing and configuring PC clients andservers.Integrated Boot ROM with Managed PC Boot Agent (MBA) Software
The MBA boot ROM adds management capabilities to the NIC by enabling the PC to boot from a server, rather than from itslocal drive.
This preboot support allows you to use management applications to perform tasks such as:
    • Installing & Configure a new PC that has never been connected to the network
    • Upgrading Software
    • Configure / Reconfigure Multiple Systems Simultaneously
    • Scan For Viruses
    • Back-up Hard Drives
    • Performing Disaster Recovery Tasks

    Remote System Alerts
The 3C905C-TX-M NIC can be configured to continuously transmit a packet to an alert target management station.
If the management station fails to receive the regularly scheduled packet, an alert can be triggered that signals apossible PC power loss or theft. The 3C905C-TX-M NIC can alos transmit a workgroup keep-alive packet periodically while the PC is in a sleep state.
This packet prevents the PC\'s workstation address from being aged-out of switch & router tables.
TestingThe testing setup consisisted of a fairly modern motherboard [ BIOSTAR TA75M ] and an old Pace Model 4111N-031 DSLModem capable of dishing out DHCP addresses.
The NIC was seated in the motherboard and connected to the DSL Modem via an ethernet cable.
Initially tested with a fully patched Windows 10 Operating System which recognized the itemas a NIC, but as an Unknown Ethernet Controller.
No suitable Windows 10 drivers could be located -- This item is ** NOT PLUG & PLAY COMPATIBLE ** with current Windows OperatingSystems-- Booted the computer with a fully patched Ubuntu 20.10 [ Groovy Gorilla ].
NIC was recognized and fully fuctional without any further action.A Screenshot was taken from the management page of the DSL Modem showing
    (a) the NIC was capable of both acquiring a DHCP address from the modem and was able to acess the DSL modem viaethernet to display the page and
    (b) the IP address and MAC address of the NIC [ MAC address matches the onepictured of the physical item ].Another screenshot was taken from the Nutty package showing details about the NIC.Yet another screenshot was taken from the System Profiler showing (more or less) the same details reported by Nutty.Picture 1 shows:Top Down Side Angle View of NICPicture 2 shows:Top of NIC w/ MAC Address & Serial #Picture 3 shows:Bottom of NICPicture 4 shows:Front of NIC | RJ45 Connection and LED IndicatorsPicture 5 shows:Back of NICPicture 6 shows:Windows 10 Screenshot
