There are times when Ethernet cabling has to be run throughout a building. Riser cables are fine for long runs in walls, ceilings and conduits. But when cabling must be run in the plenum spaces between the floors of a building, fire-resistant plenum cable is what you need. And Cmple’s Cat5e bare copper plenum cable is the perfect choice for most applications and networks.
The reason you need a different type of cabling to run in plenum spaces is simple: it’s safer. The jacketing of this cable is plenum-rated under National Fire Protection Association standards, meaning it won’t catch fire unless exposed to extremely high temperatures. If a fire breaks out in the space between the floors of a building (where fire is most likely to spread quickly), this fire-resistant cabling will not help spread the flames. The jacketing is also made from material which won’t give off the same toxic fumes emitted by normal PVC cable jackets.
Now that we’ve addressed the jacket, let’s talk about the cable underneath. It’s made of twisted pairs of solid, 24 gauge copper wire (not copper-clad aluminum) – and it’s Cat5e, meaning that it’s ideal for all Ethernet network purposes. Category 5e cables provide high-bandwidth and high-speed data transmission; they can handle as much as 350 MHz (unlike category 5, which is pretty much capped at 100 MHz) and are designed to support gigabit networks as well as older, slower ones.
The other major benefit to Cat5e twisted pair cables is that they have more twists than Cat5 cables; those extra twists drastically reduce problems with crosstalk and interference which can cause packet loss and corrupted data transfer. When you couple that data integrity with vastly improved bandwidth and speed, it’s clear why old Category 5 cabling should be replaced with Cat5e (or if you’re running new cable, why Cat5e should be used instead of Cat5). There’s really no comparison. More-expensive Cat6 cabling may be “the future,” but Cat5e is perfect for “the now.” It’s the right choice for just about any type of Ethernet network you could need, from 10Base and 100BaseX up to 1000BaseTX. It’s also great for telephone and video transmission systems.
