ABOUT THE 200 NON-MEDIUM ERRORSThis is the one number on this listing that looks high, so here it is up front rather than left for you to discover.
A non-medium error is a bus or interface event - a reset, an aborted command, a loss of dword synchronisation. It is not a media defect and it does not mean the drive lost data. What it usually reflects is a drive that spent years on a busy shared SAS backplane with other drives, expanders and cables involved.
What matters alongside it is what the media counters say, and they are all zero: grown defect list 0, uncorrected read errors 0, uncorrected write errors 0, uncorrected verify errors 0, and zero background-scan sectors rewritten. The drive also took a complete 6 TB write without producing a single reallocation.
One honest limitation: the 200 figure is our reading from BEFORE the wipe. We did not retain a post-wipe raw capture for this drive, so unlike some of our other listings we cannot show you that this counter held flat across the write. We can show you that the grown defect and uncorrected error counters did, because those are in both catalogue captures.
ABOUT THE 12 Gb/s FIGUREWe are quoting it because we measured it - the drive reported a negotiated logical link rate of 12.0 Gb/s on our controller and that reading is in our capture. Your actual rate still depends on your controller and backplane.
SECTOR FORMAT - READ THIS IF YOU ARE COMPARING 6TB DRIVESThis drive is 512e: 512-byte logical sectors with 4096-byte physical sectors. It drops into any normal SAS controller or array and behaves like any other 512-byte drive. We mention it because 4Kn drives of the same capacity exist and are NOT interchangeable in every setup. This one is the ordinary, compatible format.
HOW WE TESTEDCatalogued with smartctl before anything was written to it, then given a full-length zero overwrite of every logical block with dd until the device reported end-of-media, then catalogued again. The pass took 12 hours 12 minutes. Grown defects 0 before and 0 after. Uncorrected errors 0 before and 0 after.
HONEST ASSESSMENTA used enterprise drive with real runtime - 6507 hours and about 50 TB read. It is clean where cleanliness counts and it took a full-surface write without complaint. Good for a NAS, a lab array, or bulk capacity where you have redundancy. It is not new and it is not a long-term archival solution.
INTERFACE NOTEThis is a SAS drive. It will NOT work in a SATA port. You need a SAS controller or backplane.
DATA SANITIZATIONEvery logical block was overwritten with zeros, running until the drive itself reported end-of-media. We then read back the start, middle and end and confirmed all three contained zero non-zero bytes. The per-drive log records RESULT: WIPE VERIFIED OK. It arrives fully zeroed with no partition table.
