It enables use of the rare white-cased Unidisk 3.5 drive! The is a 28-pin custom ROM chip for the classic Apple IIC.It resembles the Apple brand enhanced ROM # 342-0033.Inside the IIC, the older UNENHANCED ROM is # 342-0277.The Enhanced ROM chip adds these features to your IIC:(1) Capability to operate the Unidisk 3.5" 800K external disk drive.(2) The checkerboard self-test: Hold down the two Apple-keys at power-up;If enhanced, you will see a moving checkerboard pattern whichends with, "SYSTEM OK." The self-test will identify any specificRAM memory chipthat has gone bad. Other deficiencies are alsoidentified. Thecheckerboard self-test is shown in the fourth photo. If youpresentlycan get the checkerboard self-test with your IIc, thenyour computer is already enhanced and my ROM chip is not needed.(3) A customized briefone-two word messageat the center-topof the opening screen. This message is displayed for threeseconds every time when the Apple IIc is powered up.
A two-sided instruction sheet to install the chip is included.Essentially, you just replace the existing 28-pin ROM chipwith this chip, then make two minor soldered changeson the IIC motherboard.A photocopy will be enclosed ofOtto Linzmeyer's article in the
January 1988 issue of A+ magazine, "THE APPLE IIC FAMILY TREE,"which describes firmware/hardware differences among
the three distinct versions of Apple IIC that were released
(1984-1988). Also enclosed will be a photocopied section from theApple IIc Technical Reference Manual (1985) that describesthe Unidisk 3.5 ROM code that is contained in this chip. The Apple IIC Plus differs totally from the three earlier IIc models.

Can someone checkthis for me? I urged the buyer who reportedthis, to prepare a KansasFest presentation on it.Many Apple IIc users will be thrilled to confirmthat the ROM-enhanced IIc can operate an externalhard drive! Notify me as soon as possible, howthis capability can be achieved, and I will announceit in person at the upcoming KansasFest conference,at Kansas City MO, July 19-24, 2022.

PRESERVING FIRMWARE ON EPROMS:A KEY TO "APPLE II FOREVER"

ABSTRACTMost computer equipment contain EPROMs in their circuits:CPUs, printers, interface cards, or peripherals. The EPROMchips contain firmware code to controloperation of thedevice. An EPROM looks like alarge IC chip: It is wide, with24 to 40 pins. There is asmall round window in the center ofthe upper side of the chip, with a microlattice of fine metalwires visible through the clear quartz-glass window. TheEPROM chips can be erased and reconfigured by hours ofexposure to ultraviolet light, followed by software-controlled"burning" of fresh code. The useof EPROMs allows the periodicupgrading of firmware. In mypresentation, EPROMs andrelated hardware will be shown and discussed. Knowledgeabout EPROM technology should be sharedamong Apple IIdevotees because the EPROMS can go bad after years of service. The firmware codecan be stored on floppy disks, and thenused to rejuvenate EPROMs that have gone bad. In the longrun, spanning future decades, Apple II equipment will survive onlyif the firmware code on theEPROMs has been preserved on disks;once on disk, the codeon could be preserved forindefinite archivingby recopying it to other long-lasting media such as CD-ROMs orflash drives.Apple II users should learn EPROM-burning skills, with the needed hardware, tocreate fresh copies of the firmwarecode for themselves and to be shared widely with class="MsoNormal" style="font-family: Impact; font-size: x-large; font-weight: bold;">

INTERNATIONAL: SALES

TO OTHER COUNTRIES

I will ship to other countries.I retain the post office receipt as proof of mailing.

International mails in recent years have become very reliable, so I will replace

any ROM chip lost during shipping. Buyers have told me that 's "Global

Shipping Program" (GSP) is very expensive for small lightweight packages

such as this ROM chip, or for small keyboard parts such as keyswitches

or keycaps,so international first class mailing is preferred; even then,

U.S. postage ratesbegin at $17.00 for most foreign countries beyond

Canada.In mid-2020, has launched a special international

shipping service, by which the seller ships to a trans-shipment

service in CA or KY, from which it is carried to the foreign destination.

Look at all myitems offered forsale; combined shipping of two or

more items costsonly slightly more than shipping a single small item.

I must guessat the weight / postage cost. I will guessslightly high,

but will refund any excess amountpaid for postage,to the buyer's

account, immediately afterthe item has been shipped.
