Up for sale is a piece of portable computing history: an AST PowerExec 4/25SL (Model 3) laptop. This is a robust machine running the Intel 486SL processor, designed specifically for early mobile computing power management.
This unit is in remarkable cosmetic condition for its age (see photos) and is a prime candidate for a vintage collector or a restoration enthusiast.
The condition summary is simple: The unit powers on and the screen displays information clearly. However, the internal hard drive has recently failed and will require replacement.
Testing Report:Power: The unit turns on successfully when connected to power.Screen: The monochrome/grayscale screen illuminates brightly and displays text clearly (see photos). There is some minor vertical banding/unevenness, which is typical for passive matrix LCD displays of this vintage. The Issues: Until recently, this unit booted successfully into MS-DOS. After being left running for 1-2 hours, the internal hard drive began making distinct, recurring clicking noises. The machine froze, and upon rebooting, it now displays the error message: "The computer cannot start. Insert a system disk and press <Enter>". The internal hard drive must be considered failed.
Additionally, the keyboard is working great, however I can tell the case is loose and the keyboard can flip up. Does not effect usage, but would be good to fix. Intentionally left as-is for the buyer to decide if they want to fix.
Due to the mechanical failure of the hard drive, this item is sold strictly AS-IS, for parts or repair only. No returns.
