" I installed the driver that came with the Hub that was needed for the gigabit Ethernet port. They supply the driver on a 3 inch CD. If you don't have an optical drive with a tray vs the slot type that only accepts standard sized CDs, you will need to try downloading it from the manufacturer's website. Using my external optical drive, the driver installation went well but you need to take your time to be sure you are installing the the correct driver. They supply drivers for both Mac and Windows for three different devices.
I had to replace my Macbook Pro late last year and much to my surprise the new Macbook Pro no longer has an Ethernet port. You can buy an Apple Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter, but for about the same price you can buy this device that will give you an Ethernet port and three USB 3 ports. The device supports an external power source, but you probably don't need it. I connected an external optical drive and a WD external hard drive, plus the usb transmitter for my mouse and everything worked. I then tested the Ethernet port hardwired to my router and it also worked as expected.
The Ethernet port had two LED lights to display connection and data status. The Hub device has a power on light that for My Macbook pro remains on even when the laptop is in sleep mode. I don't know if this would have affect on battery life, but probably not. This may be necessary so you can wake up the laptop by just moving the mouse 766623506892 _|_
