You are purchasing an original Apple Disk II 5.25-inch floppy drive (Serial # 705984) that has been carefully refurbished for continued use with vintage Apple II-series computers. Note- you are receiving the drive pictured. The internal pictures are to show what I replace- but are a different drive.
Unlike a drive that has only been checked for basic operation, this unit has received both electronic and mechanical preventative maintenance before being offered for sale.
Refurbishment Includes
- Both internal circuit boards recapped — aging electrolytic capacitors replaced
- Read/write head carefully cleaned
- Head rail cleaned and lubricated for smooth head movement
- Internal drive mechanism visually inspected and cleaned as appropriate
- Rotational speed calibrated to approximately 300 RPM
- Functionally tested before shipment
Why Service a Disk II Drive?
The Apple Disk II is a durable design, but these drives are now more than 40 years old. Original capacitors can deteriorate, old lubrication can dry out, and contamination on the read/write head can affect reliable disk operation.
Correct rotational speed is also important for dependable reading and writing. For that reason, the drive speed is checked and adjusted as part of the refurbishment process rather than simply verifying that the motor spins.
Serviced, Not Simply Tested Many vintage floppy drives are sold after only a basic power-on or disk-read test. This drive has been opened and serviced internally, with both the electronic and mechanical maintenance described above completed before sale.
