All my drives have three processesapplied to them

1 I place them in a device that writes 1's and 0's all over the drive erasing all data

2 I run Spinrite on level 4 on each drive. What this does is read each sector and rewrites the sector to prove the sector is working. If it is not then the hard drive takes it out of use and swaps in a good one. Drives have spare sectors for just this reason. Not only will this make your data safer but makes the drive run faster.

3 Then I run Crystal Disc Info This utility which will check the drive and I only list drives that pass with a Green or Good rating.
