MacUpdate Desktop 4.2.3 makes it really easy to keep all of your Macintosh software up-to-date. It tracks over 11,000 Apple and 3rd party applications, and highlights outdated ones installed on your Mac in red. Not only is this convenient for using the latest features in newer versions of your software but it helps keep your Mac running smoothly and problem free. Why would I use MacUpdate Desktop? Most users run a variety of different software applications on their Mac. You might use many free Apple programs that come with your Mac, and Apple's Software Update panel usually takes care of updating most of those when improved versions are released. However, what Apple doesn't do is keep track of the thousands of other Macintosh software titles available for purchase in stores and as free downloads over the Internet.MacUpdate Desktop fills this void, allowing you to update both Apple software and 3rd party software. For example, say you have 10 different applications that you use. One of them might be a Microsoft Office product, while the other might be Apple's popular iTunes music player software. MacUpdate Desktop scans your Mac and allows you to pick which applications you want to monitor. The applications that you choose are added to a Watch List and then MacUpdate Desktop automatically lets you know when new updates are available for a product.Microsoft is always releasing new "security" updates that are often vital to have. It can be very time consuming to watch for these updates and know when to download them. With MacUpdate Desktop, it simply highlights outdated applications in red. You can then double click the listing to download the latest security patch. And our User Reviews let you know other's peoples' experience with installing a certain patch. You'll find out if the patch really helped or if it was problematic to install.MacUpdate Desktop SynchronizationWe feels it's important to mention the new Synchronization feature within MacUpdate Desktop 4.2 and later. It allows you to synchronization you web-based Member watch list with the application-based Desktop watch list. Simply click the "Sync" button and it will connect to MacUpdate and do a comparison of the latest changes to each watch list.It works by assuming that the latest changes in either watch list are the changes that take precedence. For example, if you add a product to your web-based watch list but not your Desktop watch list, clicking the Sync button will add that product to your Desktop watch list. However, if you then remove it from your Desktop watch list and click Sync, it will remove it from your web-based watch list, because the removal action happened more recently than the add action. It is not recommended that you use the Sync feature unless you want both your web-based and Desktop watch lists to be identical. Also note that listings imported from your web-based watch list into MacUpdate Desktop will not have an icon or display the Installed version. This is because it is not aware that the particular title is actually installed locally on your machine. You can match listings like this to its installed location by holding the CONTROL key and clicking on a listing. Select "Edit Item Options..." from the contextual menu and "Select Other Location" from the "Link Location" box.Is adding to your Watch List not returning results from the MacUpdate database? If you try and add a title installed on your Mac to your Watch List, and it queries MacUpdate's database but doesn't find the program, please email us with the exact name of the application as it's labeled on your Mac. We'll manually link it to the proper MacUpdate listing for you.
