NEC MultiSpin 4Xc (Model CDR-C302) External SCSI 7-Disc CD-ROM Changer – 1995 Vintage
Up for sale is a cool piece of retro computing history: the NEC MultiSpin 4Xc, a quad-speed (4X) external SCSI CD-ROM jukebox/changer from July 1995. This beast can hold and automatically swap up to 7 CDs at once — perfect for DOS, Windows 3.1/95/98, or early Macintosh setups with lots of games, encyclopedias, or multimedia titles.
Condition & Testing:
- Powers on reliably.
- The disc drawer/carousel mechanism opens and closes smoothly with the touch of each button on the front panel.
- All front buttons appear responsive.
- No discs were inserted and it was not connected to a computer via SCSI, so full read/write functionality has not been tested. However, the mechanical functions (power + loading mechanism) work as they should.
- Cosmetic condition is good for its age — some normal wear from 30+ years, but overall solid with no major damage.
- Includes a power cord (IEC inlet on the unit).
Key Features:
- 4X speed CD-ROM drive (fast for 1995)
- Holds 7 discs with automatic changer mechanism
- Dual SCSI ports (50-pin) with termination and ID DIP switches
- Analog stereo audio outputs (RCA L/R)
- Voltage selector (120V/220-240V)
- Manufactured July 1995 in Japan
- Serial No. 5752179 N1111
This is a highly sought-after item among retro PC collectors, LGR-style enthusiasts, and people building period-correct 486/Pentium or vintage Mac setups. It was featured in retro computing videos for its impressive "jukebox" design.
