Developed originally by the Lockheed Corporation and marketed globally by IBM, CADAM was the pioneering software system that revolutionized modern aerospace, automotive, and naval engineering. In 1980, this cutting-edge software ran exclusively on massive IBM mainframes (such as the IBM 360/370 architectures) and utilized vector-refresh graphic terminals equipped with function keyboards and light pens rather than standard computer mice. While millions of consumer PC manuals were printed in the decades that followed, enterprise mainframe documentation was strictly controlled, distributed only to select corporate clients, and routinely ordered to be destroyed or discarded during system upgrades. Survival of a complete 1980 binder is a true anomaly.
