SCSI Olympus Turbo MO III 640MB Magneto Optical SCSI II HD50 MO Drive + 4x DisksFor sale is this Olympus Turbo Mo III SCSI 640MB Magneto Optical MO USB Drive with 4x MO Disks. Model MOS365S.
Magneto Optical is a very cool and under apprecaited technology. The media is essentially the same technology as Sony’s MiniDiscs except.. larger. Disks are random access rewriteable, just like using a flash drive, or a zip disk except they are exceptionally reliable. Because of their design written data is verified every pass reding the error rate to almost 0 (aside from damaged media.. of course).
The drives themselves can support smaller media sides, for example a 640MB drive can read 128mb, 230mb, 540mb as well as 640MB disks. Drivers are not required for Windows or Mac OS 8.x, 9.x or MacOS X. Read/write speeds are around 1-2MB/s which may not be the fastest but still decent enough and a bit faster than a Zip drive in its best case scenario.
These drives work exceptionally well on older systems (Mac OS 9, Windows 9x, Windows XP), on newer more modern operating systems (such as the later versions of Mac OSX or Windows 10) they still run pretty well though sometimes they can feel slow compared to newer types of drives, plus some operating systems like to spontaneously read/write additional data to drives. And of course, they were used by Ethan Hunt in Mission Impossible to steal the NOC list… Cool.
This particular drive features a SCSI-II HD50 interface and is one of the faster drives made with a 3869RPM spindle speed & 2MB intelligent cache buffer with claimed (by Olympus) data transfer speeds of 4.2MB/s. However in real world performance it is quite fast but not that fast. It supports up to 640MB discs.
Cosmetically the drive is in good condition for its age showing only small signs of marks from storage. It has a translucent casing, the front portion of the drive does have some yellowing.
Drive comes Australian power supply. Also included are 4x MO disks, 2x 230MB and 2x 640MB disks made by Mitsubishi, ADTec and Teijin. All disks have been secure erased and tested to ensure they are 100% operational with this drive.
Drive has been tested on a Mac Mini M2 with a Microtech USB to SCSI adapter without issues, all disks included with this drive have been formatted FAT32 but can be reformatted to any format that your system supports if it supports MO drives on SCSI.
Please note that this has a SCSI HD50 interface. As there are many different SCSI interfaces (HD50, DB25, HDI-30, Centronics 50 etc etc) this could connect to there is no SCSI cable included. You will need to supply your own SCSI cable to connect to your equipment the way you wish to.
It is the buyer’s responsibility to ensure compatibility prior to purchase.
