Racks are built for rack-mount gear, and almost nobody's rack contains only rack-mount gear. This is the shelf that gives everything else a proper home instead of a pile on the floor of the cabinet.

• Mini PCs and small form factor machines. An Intel NUC, a Mac mini, a thin client, a Raspberry Pi cluster.
• Desktop network gear. Cable modems, ONTs, firewalls, unmanaged switches, Wi-Fi controllers, anything that shipped with rubber feet instead of ears.
• NAS units and external drives that were never meant to be racked.
• A KVM, a laptop during maintenance, or just a flat surface to set tools on while you work in the cabinet.
• UPS batteries, media converters, power bricks and the assorted small hardware that otherwise dangles by its own cables.

Cantilever means it mounts to the front posts only. That is the useful part. It works in a 4-post cabinet and equally well in an open 2-post relay rack, where a full-depth shelf simply will not fit. One shelf, either rack type.

The mounting hardware is included and still sealed with the shelf. That sounds minor until you have a shelf in hand at 9pm and no cage nuts. Plenty of used shelf listings arrive as bare metal with nothing to hang it on.

Why This One

• 44 pounds is a real rating. That is a heavy NUC, a NAS with drives in it, or a decent stack of gear. Plenty of budget cantilever shelves are rated half that and flex visibly when loaded.
• Vented, not solid. Whatever you set on it is almost certainly passively cooled. Slots under the equipment matter more than they sound like they should.
• Works in 2-post racks. Front-mount only, so it fits open relay racks where a four-post shelf is simply not an option.

Before You Buy

• Check your rack's mounting holes. The included cage nuts are for square-hole racks. If your rack has round or threaded holes, you will need the appropriate hardware for that type, which StarTech notes in the manual.
• 10 inches deep. Measure your equipment first. A 12 inch device will overhang the front edge.
• Cantilever design. Supported at the front only. Put heavier items toward the rear of the tray, against the posts, rather than out at the lip.
• Standard 19 inch racks. Not for 10 inch or half-width cabinets.
• Outer carton shows storage creasing. The product inside is sealed and untouched. Photos show the actual item.
• Sold as-is with no returns. New and unused, but please ask any questions before buying.
