  • Signal Combining: It takes the audio and video output from systems like the Atari 2600 or 8-bit computers and modulates it onto VHF Channel 3 or 4.
  • Manual Toggle: A small mechanical slide switch on the box lets you choose between regular TV antenna/cable viewing and the game/computer input.
  • Impedance Matching: Older versions used twin-lead screw terminals or coaxial adapters to bridge the console signal safely into the television.
Key Features and Design
  • The "TV / GAME" Slider: A manual mechanical switch on top allows you to toggle the signal source. Sliding it to "TV" lets the broadcast antenna signal pass through to the television, while sliding it to "GAME" (or "COMPUTER") overrides the antenna and feeds the console's signal into the TV.
  • Physical Connections:
    • Twin-Lead Prongs: Two flat metal prongs (spade lugs) meant to be screwed directly into the 300-ohm VHF antenna terminals on the back of older TVs.
    • Antenna Screws: Two screw terminals on the box itself where you would re-attach your household regular TV antenna wire.
    • RCA Port: A single female port on the box that accepts the long hardwired RF cable running out from the back of the Atari console.
  • Channel Modulation: The box routes the unified audio and video signal from the Atari console onto broadcast TV frequencies, forcing the user to tune their television to either Channel 3 or Channel 4 to view the game.
  • Sticky Pad: Most authentic Atari switch boxes included an adhesive foam pad on the bottom so you could stick the metal box securely to the back of your television set.
